International music expo planned for Sydney

An international music expo will be held each year in Sydney to promote the music industry, Premier Morris Iemma announced in July.

The NSW Government through its Major Events Board will provide $500,000 over three years to the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) to help establish and stage the annual music expo – Song Summit Sydney - starting in April next year.

The news followed an announcement by Arts Minister Frank Sartor that NSW had won back one of the nation’s top screen industry events, the Screen Producers Association Fringe Festival, from Queensland.

The Song Summit Sydney will be the only one of its kind in Australia and the Asia Pacific, and will help drive exports, foster international business opportunities, and create more jobs in the music industry.

Sydney is already Australia’s music capital with the “big four” global record groups – Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner – and the two peak bodies, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA).

“What Sydney now needs is a world-class event to promote our music industry to national and international markets, and that’s exactly what the Sydney Song Summit will provide,” Mr Iemma said.

The Song Summit Sydney will include:

• a conference involving songwriters, composers, publishers, producers, managers, agents and performers to address issues such as new technologies, copyright, licensing and business development

• a daily keynote address by a high level, influential individual from the international music industry along with panel workshops

• a retail exhibition open to the public to target retail exhibitors from across the country.

The creative industries, which employ about 110,000 people in Sydney, are one of five key growth sectors identified in the NSW Government’s Innovation Statement.

“The creative industries equal jobs and investment. It’s that simple,” Mr Iemma said.
