NSW Government targets international Games contracts
The NSW Government helped the State's companies target lucrative international Games contracts through a high level briefing on August 9.
The expert briefing and panel discussion was used to advise NSW companies wanting to compete for work on major upcoming Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian Games events around the world.
Following Sydney 2000, the NSW Government formed a secretariat, contained within the Department of State and Regional Development, to target international sporting event contracts.
Since the Sydney Olympics, NSW has been home to a large range of companies with international experience in the delivery of infrastructure and services for major sporting and cultural events.
We have seen NSW companies compete successfully to help deliver events including the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup 2003, Athens 2004 Olympics, the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics, and the Doha 2006 Asian Games to be held in December.
In July this year, the Australian International Sporting Events Secretariat (AISES), a collaboration between NSW and Victoria to further promote Australian Olympic and Commonwealth Games expertise internationally, was launched.
Now the NSW Government and AISES is focused on helping companies win work at upcoming events including Doha 2006, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, the South Africa 2010 World Cup, and the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The August 9 briefing featured distinguished speakers including:
• former SOCOG chief executive Sandy Hollway, currently a senior adviser to AISES and the NSW Government • former Sydney Olympic Coordination Authority director David Churches, currently a senior adviser to AISES and the NSW Government • PTW Architects managing director John Bilmon, whose company designed the famous “Watercube” aquatic centre for Beijing 2008 • practice director Ross Seymour of Bligh Voller Nield, whose sports design and architecture work has included the Sydney Olympic Stadium, and masterplans for the Sydney, Beijing and Athens Olympics • Intelligent Risks chief executive Neil Fergus, a security specialist engaged for the Sydney and Athens Olympics and Doha Asian Games.
