AusBiotech conference launched The Department of State and Regional Development hosted the official launch of Australia's leading biotechnology conference, AusBiotech 2006, on August 15. AusBiotech will be held at Darling Harbour from November 19-22, and is expected to attract more than 1,500 national and international delegates and 140 exhibitors. About 100 members of the NSW biotechnology industry attended the official preview launch of AusBiotech at the NSW Trade and Investment Centre. Minister for Small Business David Campbell said: "AusBiotech 2006 will be an opportunity to promote NSW’s strengths as a location for biotechnology research and business development to an international audience that will include chief executive officers, presidents and board members of high profile international corporations." The AusBiotech 2006 conference theme, Bridging Innovation and Investment, has a strong business development element to complement the scientific work which will be showcased at the event. AusBiotech 2006 will provide networking opportunities, exhibitions and presentations on: • business partnering, negotiating and international alliances • clinical trials • environmental biotechnology • animal health and biotechnology; and • medical devices. NSW is home to about 80 per cent of multinational pharmaceutical companies in Australia, 70 per cent of pharmaceutical companies with regional headquarters in Australia, and 40 per cent of Australia’s biotechnology industry. The NSW Government showed its commitment to the biotechnology sector when it provided $68 million for its five year BioFirst strategy in 2001, and renewed that commitment in the 2006/07 Budget by allocating a further $25 million to BioFirst over the next five years.
