NSW to use APEC to strengthen Asian business ties
Next year’s APEC meeting in Sydney is an opportunity to strengthen business ties between NSW and Asia, Premier and Minister for State Development Morris Iemma said.
Speaking at the 2006 NSW-Asia Dinner in July, Mr Iemma said the NSW Government would support key business events to promote business opportunities and build closer ties to the region.
From January 2007, Australia will host a series of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings, culminating in the APEC heads of government meeting in Sydney in September 2007.
APEC presents a unique opportunity to showcase NSW business and the local economy to Asia.
The NSW Government is already working with governments around Asia and with business groups both here and overseas to ensure business is able to capitalise on available opportunities.
Mr Iemma said the NSW Government would support key business events to promote business opportunities and build closer ties to the region, including:
• a joint economic meeting between the Governments of NSW and Guangdong Province, China, in December 2006 as part of the official Sister-State Relationship; and • key business events coinciding with the APEC Forum to showcase the NSW business environment, industries, economic strength and cultural attributes.
A number of steps have already been taken to boost NSW’s business ties with Asia, including:
• an increased number of international trade visits to Asia, including visits to China, India, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand • a new market specialist program within the Department of State and Regional Developed focused on attracting investment from the emerging markets of China and India • greater coordination of overseas project activities across the NSW Government to maximise business development opportunities; and • new trade development and export programs including promoting NSW sports management expertise to the Beijing Olympics and Asian Games.
Mr Iemma said the NSW-Asia Business Advisory Council has a crucial role to play promoting these events while continuing its important work building ties with the Asian business community.
